Do you offer a free trial?

Yep! We offer a week free to make sure we’re the right fit. If you'd like to keep training with us after that week, we ask that you join as a member.

Trial classes are by appointment only. You must book each class you plan to attend. The ability to book a particular class will close several hours before the class begins. We generally don’t do same-day drop-ins, so please book early. Space is limited—if the class is not available to book, please choose another class. To preserve the training experience of our members, we reserve the right to turn away non-members who arrive without a prior appointment.

In order to save time, before arriving at the gym, please:

  1. Book a day to come by via our schedule,
  2. Sign our participation waiver, and
  3. Review our gym rules.

Aim to arrive 5-10 minutes before the start of class. Come with a clean body and trimmed fingernails and toenails (we allow GEL or SHELLAC nail polish ONLY to avoid permanently marking the mats). You’ll need to remove all jewelry, so make sure you have a place to keep it safe. We recommend wearing a dry-fit athletic shirt and require shorts or pants without zippers, pockets, or buttons (e.g., Rugby shorts or yoga pants). During your free trial, you do not need a gi to participate in the gi classes.

Do you offer beginner classes?

We do not currently offer beginner-specific classes, and instead focus on all-levels classes, in which complete beginners are welcome and usually paired with an upper belt. While we understand that stepping on the mat with experienced practitioners can feel intimidating to beginners, our philosophy is that it's simply safer and a better learning experience for beginners to practice with someone who already knows jiu-jitsu.

What should I do before my first class? What should I wear?

We’re glad you want to get on the mats! Trial classes are by appointment only. You must book each class you plan to attend. I'm visiting. Can I drop in? How much does it cost?

Out-of-town visitors are welcome to train for no cost with a prior appointment for each class they plan to attend. Unfortunately, we cannot provide loaner gear, so please bring your own gear to come train (whatever color gi you like is fine).

Do you offer children’s or teen’s classes?

Not at this time. All participants must be at least 18 years old to get on the mats.

Am I too old or out of shape to train Jiu-Jitsu?

No! We have adults of all ages and walks of life on the mats. Doing jiu-jitsu itself is a great way to get in shape. Just come train.

Where are you located? Is there parking?

You can find us at 755 Bellevue Ave E in a historic building in the heart of the Capitol Hill neighborhood of Seattle, WA.

We’re about a 15 minute walk from the Capitol Hill light rail station and are close to numerous bus routes—the #3 drops off right outside.

We have street parking only and parking in front of the gym is sparse. We suggest parking a few blocks away and walking a few minutes to the gym.

How is Midnight and the nonprofit model different?

We are driven by passion, not profit. All of our instructors are dedicated volunteers who have undergone background checks and also contribute by paying membership dues. The fees that we collect go entirely towards operating costs (primarily rent and upkeep of the training facility). Our mission is to foster a community of people dedicated to training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for the purposes of personal fulfillment, community, and sport.

Our evening all-levels classes are appropriate for both beginners and advanced students. We follow a broad curriculum with topics that rotate monthly.

These 120 minute classes typically consist of 60 minutes of instruction followed by 60 minutes of sparring (think of this as lecture followed by lab). Members may come or go at any time.

The instruction portion often consists of 10-15 minutes of warm-up (usually movement drills with a partner), followed by about 30-45 minutes of technique instruction (including drilling and specific training, such as games, situational sparring, or positional sparring).

Following the instruction portion of class, the remaining hour is usually dedicated to additional specific training and free sparring.
